GearSet – 3D view and cutting layout

Description

A pair of involute spur gears for cutting from plywood or acrylic: you set the module, number of teeth, pressure angle and backlash, and the centre distance and mesh phase are calculated automatically. The gears sit on a base plate with two holes for axles (pins, screws). Lightening holes can be added.

What it is used for

Designs with complex geometry – bending panels, rounded shapes and living hinges – show what laser cutting can do and suit refined gift and display packaging.

Material and thickness

GearSet is cut from plywood and other sheet materials. The material thickness can be set from 3 to 12 mm (default 6 mm); tabs, slots and clearances are recalculated automatically with every change.

Assembly

The parts are joined with finger joints: the tabs fit into slots and hold without screws. Kerf compensation is set in the configurator so the joint fits snugly; a drop of wood glue fixes it permanently if needed.

At standard dimensions the set has 3 kinds of parts; the configurator nests them on a sheet and calculates the cutting time and an approximate price.

Questions and answers

Which files can I get for GearSet?

For laser cutting – DXF, SVG and PDF with the layout of all parts; for preview – STL, OBJ and a PNG image. Files are downloaded from the configurator, and the terms are on the “Pricing” page.

What dimensions can I set?

Dimensions are set in the configurator: module 1.5–8 mm; teeth on the first gear 8–80; teeth on the second gear (0 = single gear) 0–120. The configurator recalculates all parts automatically and shows the 3D model in real time.

Which material and thickness should I use?

Plywood and other sheet materials from 3 to 12 mm thick work well; the default is 6 mm.

Do I need glue or screws?

No screws are needed – the parts hold with their own tabs and slots. A drop of wood glue is optional, for a permanent joint.

How many parts are in the set and how long does cutting take?

At standard dimensions the set has 3 kinds of parts. The configurator nests the parts on a sheet and shows an approximate cutting time and price for your machine and material.
